He made the appeal at the 2014 Coconut Breaking Festival to commemorate the 19th convocation ceremony of the institution scheduled for August 6 and 7.
“Now that peace has been restored to LASU, we must all join hands to move the university forward,” he said. Mr. Obafunwa said no progress could be achieved in the institution in an atmosphere of rancor and strife. “The coconut breaking festival is an avenue to offer prayers for peace and progress in LASU,” he said. LASU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Senapon Bakre, also prayed that the 30-year-old institution would not collapse, but wax stronger. Also speaking, Fidelis Njokanma, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), urged for an enduring peace in the university for it to regain its lost glory. In his comment, Saheed Oseni, the Chairman, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, LASU chapter, said God had answered all their prayers following the restoration of peace in the troubled institution. The Student Union President, Nurudeen Yusuf, said students of the institution were now more concerned about the progress and development of the institution. “Over 71,000 students of LASU are interested in allowing peace to reign in the university. “We also pray for peace and progress of the university and we believe that LASU will certainly move forward like other universities in the country,’’ he said. Wale Salu, who represented the alumni association, noted that the university had produced prominent Nigerians in various fields. The 2014 coconut breaking festival which was performed at the institution’s main gate, was organised by the alumni association. (NAN)
